Why see a qualified doctor for sexual problems?

Embarrassment keeps many people away from proper care — and towards roadside advertisements, unlabelled “sex power” capsules or internet remedies. Some of these contain hidden prescription drugs or steroids that can be dangerous, especially for people with heart disease or those taking blood-pressure medicines.

Sexual health has both a body side and a mind side. A psychiatrist trained in psychosexual medicine can assess both: medical causes such as diabetes or medicine side effects, and psychological causes such as performance anxiety, stress, relationship conflict or myths learned in adolescence.

Concerns we help with

Premature ejaculation (PE)

Ejaculating sooner than desired, with distress. It is the most common male sexual concern and is very treatable with behavioural techniques and medicines.

Erectile dysfunction (ED)

Difficulty getting or keeping an erection. Causes range from performance anxiety and stress to diabetes, blood pressure, smoking and some medicines.

Low sexual desire

Reduced interest in sex in men or women — often linked to stress, depression, relationship issues, hormones or medicines.

Performance anxiety

Fear of “failing” that itself causes erection or ejaculation problems — a self-reinforcing cycle that therapy can break.

Dhat and nightfall worries

Anxiety about semen loss through nightfall, masturbation or urine. These are normal body processes; the worry is what causes the weakness and distress.

Pain or difficulty with intercourse

Including vaginismus and unconsummated marriage — common, treatable problems, often managed together with a gynaecologist.

We also help with sexual side effects of medicines (including antidepressants), compulsive sexual behaviour and sexual concerns linked to depression, anxiety or alcohol use.

What happens in the consultation

  1. 1

    A private, respectful conversation

Your concern, how long it has been present, relationship context, stress, sleep, alcohol and tobacco use, and medicines you take. You can come alone or with your partner.

  2. 2

    Medical check where needed

Blood sugar, blood pressure, hormones such as testosterone or thyroid, and referral to a urologist or gynaecologist when a physical cause needs specialist care.

  3. 3

    Clear explanation

Many problems improve as soon as myths are corrected and the cause is understood.

  4. 4

    A treatment plan

Behavioural techniques, sex therapy, medicines when appropriate, and couple sessions if helpful.

Treatment options

  • Sex therapy and counselling — sensate focus exercises, reducing performance pressure and improving communication between partners.
  • Behavioural techniques for PE — such as the stop-start and squeeze methods, practised step by step.
  • Medicines — for example on-demand or daily medicines for premature ejaculation and PDE5 inhibitors (such as sildenafil or tadalafil) for erectile dysfunction, prescribed only after checking they are safe for you.
  • Treating the root cause — anxiety, depression, alcohol or tobacco use, or medicine side effects.

Common myths

Myth

Nightfall or masturbation causes weakness, loss of vitality or infertility.

Fact

Both are normal and do not cause weakness, impotence or infertility. The anxiety about them is what makes people feel unwell.

Myth

Sexual problems mean something is permanently wrong with me.

Fact

Most sexual problems are common and treatable. Many improve quickly once anxiety and myths are addressed.

Myth

Herbal “sex power” capsules are safe because they are natural.

Fact

Unregulated products may contain hidden prescription drugs or steroids. Medicines prescribed after a check-up are safer and more effective.

Frequently asked questions

Which doctor should I consult for erectile dysfunction?

Both psychiatrists (for psychological causes such as performance anxiety, stress and relationship issues) and urologists (for physical causes) treat erectile dysfunction. Often both play a role. A psychiatrist trained in psychosexual medicine can assess you, order basic tests and refer you if a physical cause needs specialist care.

Is premature ejaculation curable?

Premature ejaculation is very treatable. Behavioural techniques, counselling to reduce anxiety and, where needed, medicines help most men gain better control and satisfaction.

Is a psychiatrist the same as a sexologist?

“Sexologist” is not a separate recognised medical degree in India. Qualified doctors who treat sexual problems include psychiatrists (psychosexual medicine), urologists, andrologists and gynaecologists. Dr. Jash Ajmera is a qualified psychiatrist who provides psychosexual consultations.

Can I consult online for a sexual problem?

Yes. Many people prefer the privacy of an online consultation. An in-person examination or tests are arranged only when needed.

Can my wife or partner join the consultation?

Yes, and it often helps. Sexual problems usually affect both partners, and couple sessions make treatment more effective. You can also start alone.

Is the consultation confidential?

Completely. Your concerns, records and prescriptions are kept strictly confidential.
