Postpartum depression treatment in Surat & online

Postpartum depression is depression that starts during pregnancy or in the year after childbirth, causing persistent sadness, anxiety, exhaustion and difficulty bonding or coping. It is common — about 1 in 5 new mothers in India — and it is not a sign of being a bad mother. Counselling, family support and breastfeeding-compatible medicines help most mothers recover. Symptoms of postpartum depression

  • Feeling sad, empty or crying most days for more than two weeks
  • Severe anxiety or panic, constantly worrying about the baby’s health
  • Feeling disconnected from the baby, or that you are a bad mother
  • Unable to sleep even when the baby sleeps, or sleeping all the time
  • Loss of appetite, exhaustion and no interest in anything
  • Irritability or anger towards your partner or family
  • Frightening intrusive thoughts about harm coming to the baby
  • Thoughts that the family would be better off without you

Fathers can also develop depression after a baby is born. Partners deserve care too.

Why it happens

  • Hormonal and body changes after delivery, along with severe sleep deprivation.
  • A past history of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or depression in a previous pregnancy.
  • Lack of support — little help with the baby, marital conflict or feeling alone, including when living away from family.
  • Stressful circumstances — financial strain, a difficult delivery, a baby in the NICU, or domestic violence.
  • Family pressures — Indian research also links postpartum depression to pressure or disappointment about the baby’s gender.

Treatment that is safe for you and your baby

Counselling and support

For mild to moderate depression, psychotherapy (such as CBT or interpersonal therapy), practical support with night feeds and sleep, and involving the partner and family are often enough. Online sessions make it easier to get help without travelling with a newborn.

Medicines and breastfeeding

When depression is moderate to severe, antidepressants are recommended. Several antidepressants are considered compatible with breastfeeding, and the psychiatrist will choose one with the lowest exposure for the baby. Untreated depression carries its own risks for mother and child — so this is a decision you make together with your doctor, not alone.

Planning a pregnancy with a mental health condition

If you have depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder and are planning a pregnancy, see your psychiatrist beforehand. Some medicines need to be changed in advance; others are best continued.

How family can help

  • Take over a night feed or two so the mother can sleep
  • Listen without judging — avoid “you should be happy now”
  • Help with cooking, cleaning and visitors
  • Watch for warning signs and encourage a consultation
  • Never blame the mother or compare her with others
  • Support her through treatment and follow-ups

Frequently asked questions

How long does postpartum depression last?

Without treatment it can last for months and sometimes longer. With treatment, most mothers notice improvement within a few weeks and recover fully. Early help makes recovery faster.

Can I take antidepressants while breastfeeding?

Many mothers can. Several antidepressants pass into breast milk only in very small amounts and are considered compatible with breastfeeding. Your psychiatrist will weigh the benefits and risks with you and choose the safest option.

Is postpartum depression my fault?

No. It is caused by a combination of hormonal changes, sleep loss, stress and individual vulnerability. It can happen to any mother, including those who very much wanted their baby.

Can postpartum depression happen months after delivery?

Yes. It can start any time during pregnancy or in the first year after birth. Symptoms that begin when the baby is a few months old are still worth discussing with a doctor.

Can I consult online with a newborn at home?

Yes. Online video consultations let you get help from home, in English, Hindi or Gujarati. In-person visits are available in Surat and Ankleshwar.
